What Makes a Multispecies City?

Every city is, at its core, a multispecies metropolis. Whether it’s the towering trees, the chirping crickets, the micro-organisms thriving inside a common sparrow, or the humans bustling about, life in its diverse forms is omnipresent. The sheer variety of life is more akin to a multiverse than a simple universe, a kaleidoscope of experiences and existences bound together by the fundamental particles that form the essence of life.

Yet, this diversity doesn’t mean harmony. In the grand orchestra of life, each species plays its tune, governed by its intrinsic needs. Imbalance arises when one species, say humans, amplifies its tune, drowning out the melodies of others. Modern industrial cultures are overwhelmingly anthropocentric and their cities prioritize human needs and convenience, often to the detriment of other lifeforms.

Multispecies cities recognize this imbalance. They champion biodiversity, ensuring every lifeform, no matter how minuscule, has its place. Imagine a city where every creature, culture, and creative endeavor collaborates for mutual benefit. For this vision to materialize, the paradigms that caused past imbalances must shift.

Navigating this transformation is no easy feat. Finding common ground amidst diverse species and cultures, each battling its own survival challenges, is daunting. Yet, the answer might lie in a universal elixir: water.

The Lakota people have a saying: Mni wiconi, or “Water is Life.” It’s a simple yet profound truth, underscoring the indispensability of clean water for all lifeforms. The heart of a true multispecies city should prioritize water – celebrating it, cherishing it, and safeguarding it for future generations. Only then can we hope for a harmonious urban symphony where every note, from every species, is heard and valued.
